Nerang Premier League Sides Take The Double

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS: The Nerang Eagles battled their way through two fiery matches over the weekend, downing the visiting Coomera sides with hard-fought wins in wet conditions.

In the Reserves, the Eagles looked comfortable for most of the game, with some classy football and consistent defence. A late consolation goal for Coomera left the final score at 3-1 with the points going to Nerang.

In the First Grade match, the Coomera Colts came out strong and physical, and put in a deserved goal early in the game which left the Eagles to chase the score for much of the first half.

A high-paced run down the left from Koji Kato saw him place one past the Coomera, putting the teams at 1 all as they hit the dressing sheds for half time.

An impassioned and no-nonsense dressing shed talk came from Nerang Coach Dave Benigno, who didn’t mince words as he let the boys know exactly what they needed to do.

More of the same in the second half with ongoing battles and some heated exchanges on the field.

Nerang captain Tolga Yorulmaz was already carrying a debatable yellow card from earlier in the match, and with 10 minutes to go he received his second for a late tackle, putting him on the bench and putting Nerang down to 10 men for the rest of the game.

Incoming captain Acim Tomic rallied his troops and Nerang appeared to lift to the challenge with a last-minute spur of energy and pace, leaving Coomera wanting and their defence open for Koki Miyasaka to drive forward, knocking the short cross to Tomic who faked the defence and the Coomera goalkeeper onto the turf, leaving Tomic open to shift the ball to his left and place it in the net … all with just a couple of minutes left in the game.

For sure there were a few hearts up in people’s throats as it came down to the wire, Nerang the victors.

3 – 1 win to Nerang in the Reserves
2 – 1 win to Nerang in the Firsts

This Saturday (6th April) Nerang travels to Burleigh Heads Soccer Club to take on the Bulldogs, no doubt seeking redemption from the agonising loss on penalties to Burleigh in the FFA cup round a few weeks back.
