In a stunning lift, Nerang’s FQPL Men’s U23s and Firsts spent last week sticking points in the bag, and with it came a flurry of quality goals in the back of their opponent’s nets. VIDEO BELOW — ALL FOURTEEN NERANG GOALS PALM BEACH VS NERANG / SUN 4 MAY First up was an away trip last Sunday to Palm Beach where our U23s were unlucky to not get the win, certainly dominating the play for 90 minutes but unable to convert it in the final third, ripping a draw from the Shark’s jaws in the dying minutes of the game in the form of quality Tobias McArthur strike placed from outside the box in the 88th minute of the game. The momentum built and carried through into the First Grade match, the Eagles putting on a show of grit and resilience after netting early in the 17th minute from a wild midfield floating shot from Douglas Santana, chipping the Palm Beach keeper. Palm Beach rallied back and, using its ever-present home ground advantage, flipped the match into a 2-1 lead which carried well into the second half. With the comeback in their sights, a 60th-minute penalty was converted easily by Nerang’s Doug Santana, bagging a brace for his poise on the ball and locking the scores at two a piece. The teams deadlocked, it seemed a draw was on the cards until the Eagle’s crashed forward, digging in to deliver a series of threatening attack plays, until a perfectly executed downward header from substitute Paschal Mbaka slipped under the Palmy keeper’s dive and found the corner of the goal in the 87th minute, deservedly sending the Eagles ahead. Just two minutes later, a slick combination run through the middle saw Jai Tomlinson squeeze a shot off through the blue traffic to score for Nerang, making it a 4-2 win at the final whistle. NERANG VS PIMPAMA / TUE 6 MAY No rest for the lads as on Tuesday their catch-up home games against Pimpama went ahead in less-than-favourable wet conditions. The Nerang U23s translated their Palm Beach frustration into positive action, carving through the visitors in a fine display in front of a boisterous mind-week home crowd. A quality hat trick was bagged by Lucas Wood, with two solid goals including an epic solo run from left wing through multiple defenders before firing near the penalty spot and finding the net, and himself whipping in a penalty perfectly converted. Stand out playmaker, Nerang’s Nicholas Jeffrey delivered a pin point left foot lob assist, parking the ball onto the waiting feet of Wilken Weinert who finished his run with a classy full volley shot, placed in the bottom corner. Not to miss out, Jeffrey himself also picked up a spilled shot from the Pimpama goalkeeper late in the game, blasting his own strike into their net, making it 5 goals for Nerang at the final whistle, and a convincing 5-2 win for Nerang. The First Grade was always going to be a tighter match up and it proved so from the beginning, after Pimpama’s Rhys Prudhoe produced one of the goals of the season in just the second minute of the game, spotting Nerang’s goalkeeper Daniel Orr off his line and sinking a world-class genuine half field shot from the half way line all the way into the back of Nerang’s net. What would be a deflating goal for most teams didn’t shake the Nerang resolve, with the game quickly returning to full force, Nerang taking it right back to the visitors. Nerang’s Paschal Mbaka sparked a fierce come back with two quick-succession goals, running in behind to slip one easily past the keeper in the 14th minute, and again with a fire header coming off a snap cross from Alex Jones, Mbaka gifted free reign over the back post space and finishing strongly to put Nerang ahead. A third goal for Nerang, again from a clever steal by Paschal Mbaka as he capitalised on some defensive indecision by Pimpama, sealing the hat trick for Paschal and the 3 -1 lead for Nerang in the 60th minute. The visitors clawed back late with a parting goal, and then another with Nerang keeper Dan Orr again coming unstuck and gifting a penalty to Pimpama wide in the box which was easily converted for a 3 all score going into the final minutes. As a draw result was looming, it was an undeterred Nerang Eagles attack which broke the deadlock, Jai Tomlinson pulling out the goods with a desperate sliding power shot right through and over the Pimpama keeper, coming from a scintillating through ball pass from none other than our 85th minute substitute Kobi Tomlinson. Some clever strategic team management and growing confidence within the squad puts Nerang in the driver’s seat heading forward, with this weekend’s away match against Murwillumbah postponed, and the next scheduled round to take place at home here at Nerang this Saturday 17th of May against Broadbeach United — kicking off at 3pm for the U23s and 5PM for First Grade // PALM BEACH VS NERANG • U23s 1-1 draw — Firsts 4-2 win (brace to Doug Santana) NERANG VS PIMPAMA • U23s 5-2 win (hat trick Lucas Wood) — Firsts 4-3 win (hat trick Paschal Mbaka) ALL FOURTEEN GOALS below in video
COACH ANNOUNCEMENT & PRE SEASON TRIALS/TRAINING The club is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Boelen to head up the 2025 FQPL4 Men’s campaign, with the experienced coach’s arrival already signalling what will likely be a significantly stronger season ahead for the Eagles. >>> TRIALS ANNOUNCED for Nov & Dec — Details & info at bottom of this post <<< Mark is no stranger to success in this league, and his 2022 campaign with Murwillumbah notably delivered the double to the club, winning both the premiership and the grand final, whilst also earning the club promotion. That effort also delivered a Football Queensland FQPL4 Coach Of The Year accolade for Mark. With an extensive local playing history and coaching history across club’s such as Broadbeach, Mudgeeraba and Tweed, Mark’s knowledge of the Gold Coast football landscape is second to none, and he’s already made it clear he has no illusions in terms of returning Nerang to a promotion-worthy team across the next couple of seasons. With several key yet-to-be named signings already bolstering the squad and an expectation of a stronger campaign on all fronts, there’s already been an influx of optimism around the club, something which “I like to win, it can be infectious, and that’s what I’m going to look for here at Nerang — winning and losing, it can become a habit and we will be pushing to win,” said Mark. “Nothing comes without the hard work and that’s the culture that we will develop — with the work, [winning] can happen.” “This league can be scrappy sometimes, it’s hard to get out of. I have a style I like to play but you have to be ready to adapt. “We’ll be really working to develop the right mix of players, a handful of young players and a good sprinkle of experience combined.” “There’s only one way to go and that’s to go up, it’s a great club at Nerang with a lot of history and I’m excited for the season ahead — this is going to be a team which players will want to be part of.” Joining Mark in the Reserve U23s will be returning Nerang Soccer Club veteran player/coach, Gary Stone. Stone’s wealth of game experience (with an impressive 688 senior games under his belt for Nerang) and competitive drive is legendary, with a notable section of the shelves in the clubhouse already graced with silverware from his past campaigns coaching key junior, senior and women’s teams at the club. Speaking on how many of his junior boys have followed Gary through into senior football, Garys says he’s optimisitic for a noticeable improvement in results into the 2025 season. “I think [our boys] are going to do really well this season, they’re going to be a lot stronger, they know what they’re up for now, they know what they’re playing for.” “I’m excited to be working with Mark, a new coach bringing in new things, I think it’s going to be great.” “It’s always going to be a battle but we’re pushing for at least mid table, but I think top-four is the target and we’re more than capable,” said Gary. “The boys improved massively towards the back end of last season which is great, and it showed in our results and stats, we should have won a lot more in the end but it’s definitely there.” PRE SEASON TRIALS & TRAINING Sessions are open to all interested/eligible/returning/new players – please turn up ready to play. 27 Nov 2024 – Alabaster West Field 1 – 6pm – 8pm Cancelled due to council field closures Sat 30 Nov 2024 – North Burleigh Headland (Miami side on the north side of headland) – 8am start fitness Wed 04 Dec 2024 – Alabaster West Field 2 – 6pm – 8pm 07 Dec 2024 – Location TBA 11 Dec 2024 – Alabaster West Field 1 – 6pm – 8pm 14 Dec 2024 – Location TBA 18 Dec 2024 – Alabaster West Field 1 – 6pm – 8pm 21 Dec 2024 – Location TBA Contact head coach Mark Boelen for further info or enquiries — 0431 145 919 NORTH BURLEIGH HEADLAND NORTH SIDE ALABASTER FIELDS

Celebrating Nerang Soccer’s Women’s & Girl’s Football History FEMALE FOOTBALL WEEK JOIN THE CELEBRATIONS – FRIDAY NIGHT 10 MAY at Nerang Soccer Club PHOTO GALLERY BELOW Friday 10 May, 2024 / 7:32am Since 1973 Nerang Soccer Club has championed women’s and girl’s football in South East Queensland, and this Female Football Week we look back on some of that history and ahead to the next crop of future stars in the game. Shortly after the club’s inception in 1972, Nerang Soccer Club became one of the first clubs involved in diversifying the game into the women’s realm, with the first women’s teams proudly stepping out at the Nerang Velodrome alongside the men. Over many years the women’s game has grown at Nerang and continues to grow, with 2024 seeing 25% of all players at Nerang as female, a number that continues to grow. Throughout those years the club has shared in the success and achievements of a bevy of talented and dedicated women, on the field and off the field as well, all proud to be part of the Eagles family. Legends of the game who have donned the red short for Nerang include former and current Matildas players Kerrie Rowe (528 games for Nerang), Belinda Dawney along with A-League and Matildas star Tameka Yallop. Joining them have been some of the club’s longest standing and most committed players reaching milestones rarely seen in the game. Players like Phillippa Mengel (461 games and current club secretary), Melissa Bodley (406 games) and Penny Evans (330 games) have led the way showing what it’s like to be part of the football family at Nerang and inspire younger female players to take the game. No less than 5 former players have been awarded life member status at Nerang, whilst others have represented their region and their state of Queensland at the highest levels of the game. SEE SOME OF NERANG’S REMARKABLE WOMEN’S PLAYERS LISTED BELOW PLUS SOME LEGENDARY PHOTOS This Friday May 10th sees the club hosting a celebration of female football as part of the Female Football Week, with our premier FQPL3 Women’s team facing Musgrave here at Nerang, joined by two matches from our emerging stars of tomorrow, our U11 and U13 Girls teams. On the back of a hugely successful 2022, there’s been little let up for some of the Eagles’ most promising young women’s players as they look to take it up a notch in 2023. Some high intensity sessions and the addition of several key new players has bolstered the squad currently managed by former NPL Women’s coach Jeremy McGoogan and veteran Nerang Eagles stalwart Michael Opie — and they have their sights set on oven more silverware for the club’s cabinet. With fields at Glennon Park reopening in the coming days, it’s a welcome relief for the club’s many teams seeking pre season training space including our Women’s teams. 2022 heralded one of the biggest years for women’s football in the 50-year history of the club, with multiple teams featuring some of our youngest through to masters-aged players all demonstrating that Nerang is arguably one of the most prominent forces in local women’s football on the Gold Coast right now. Michael Opie says there’s growing excitement and confidence in their camp as they edge closer to their first pre-season friendly at the end of January. “Off season’s been great and all of the women are looking forward to the challenge of playing Div One this year,” he said. “We’ve been pushing a little harder each session, and can’t wait to get out on the fields again at Glennon Park and continue or preparations for the 2023 season ahead. “We’ve had a couple of new players come into the squad and the return of a couple of quality players as well, which has really strengthened the capabilities of our group.” Opie and McGoogan’s younger side stunned the Division Two competition in 2022, taking out the grand final despite fielding a team of women mostly who were still eligible for the youth ranks, and for the team and coaches it’s only a natural progression that they take next step and take on the Division One competition in 2023. “We have our first trial game at the end of January with hoping to schedule a couple more matches in before the season starts, so we are ready to go. “The target for the year is a top-four finish, pushing for top two and a final of course, but the main aim is to continue developing this talented young squad to remain a strong force at Nerang for some time, and a push for the FQPL3 Women’s competition in the near future. “Right now our biggest challenge has been just trying to get field space for off season and trials — we would love a couple more quality players to help either build the strength of the Division One Women’s team and also build within our Division Two team to grow the depth of the squad. “Honestly, there’s few places like Nerang right now in terms of local women’s football, and the opportunities and rewards are here for player’s willing to jump right in and show what they’re made of.” Player’s wishing to get involved in these up-and-coming squads please get in tough ASAP with Michael on 0406 030 699 or email michaelopie71@gmail.com Early childhood education emphasis As society becomes more aware of the importance of early learning experiences, there is a growing trend toward an Early Childhood Education Emphasis, highlighting the need for quality preschool programs that are accessible to all families. This shift recognizes the long-term benefits of investing in early education, including improved academic performance, better social skills, and increased opportunities for success in adulthood.
